Star School Hill Prairie Natural Area

A 70-acre portion of the Star School Hill Prairie Conservation Area, 14 miles north of Rock Port on Hwy 275. Located in Section 2, T66N, R42W, Hamburg, IA, 7.5 min. topographic map. Designated August 27, 1993.

Natural Features

Dry prairie on steep loess mounds in the Western Section of the Glaciated Plains Natural Division. The mounds rise high above the Missouri River floodplain and support many species that have reached their eastern geographical range limit on the loess hill prairies of Missouri and Iowa. Blue grama, hairy grama, large beard-tongue, scarlet gaura, Great Plains skink and Plains pocket mouse are examples of rare species that occur on Star School Hill Prairie.
