Tarkio Prairie Natural Area

A 57-acre portion of Tarkio Prairie Conservation Area in the NW1/4 of Section 28, T67N, R38W, Blanchard 7.5 min. topographic map. Designated August 29, 1989.

Natural Features--Dry-mesic and mesic prairie of the Western Section of the Glaciated Plains Natural Division. Tarkio Prairie is the only known publicly-owned site in northwest Missouri for the rare prairie dandelion. The endangered western prairie fringed orchid is also known from this prairie. Long Branch Creek flows through the area, bisecting the prairie. The natural area is owned and managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation.
