Hunkah Prairie Natural Area

A 160-acre area in Prairie State Park located 12 miles west of Lamar on Hwy 160, one mile north on Hwy NN, then 1.5 miles west on a gravel road. Located in the NW1/4 of Section 27, T32N, R33W, Liberal 7.5 min. topographic map. Designated August 26, 1975.

Natural Features--This nearly flat upland prairie over fine sandy and silt loam soils in the Barden and Parsons soil series is a remnant of tallgrass prairie of the Osage Plains Natural Division. Northern harriers, Henslow's sparrows and greater prairie chickens use the area. Hunkah is the Native American word for the "Earth People," one of the grand divisions of the Osage nation. Hunkah Prairie is owned by Prairie State Park, Department of Natural Resources. Hunkah Prairie is a wildlife refuge and hunting is prohibited.
