East Drywood Creek Natural Area

A 50-acre area located along one mile of East Drywood Creek in Prairie State Park in the NE1/4 of Section 21, and the SE1/4 of Section 16, T32N, R33W, Liberal 7.5 min. topographic map. Designated January 3, 1986.

Natural Features--One mile of high quality prairie headwaters stream of the Osage Plains Natural Division having rock bottom riffles and deep pools, and bordering scenic sandstone ledges. Dry and dry-mesic prairie occur on moderate slopes adjacent to the stream, while mesic prairie dominates the stream terraces. Several state-listed species occur within the area including northern harrier, Mississippi kite, Henslow's sparrow, yellow-headed blackbird, greater prairie chicken and upland sandpiper.
