Castor River Shut-Ins Natural Area
A 209-acre area of the Amidon Memorial Conservation Area in Section 10, T33N, R8E, Higdon 7.5 topographic map. Access is by gravel road off Hwy 72 or J. Designated January 29, 1993.
Natural Features--Located in the St. Francois Mountains Section of the Ozark Natural Division. The Castor River Shut-Ins is Missouri's only known granite shut-ins. The pink granite, from the Bread Tray formation, is also exposed throughout the area's glade and woodland complex. Interesting glade species found here include pineweed, wild hyacinth, prickly pear, fame flower and the eastern collared lizard. Castor River Shut-ins is owned and managed by the Department of Conservation.
