Buffalo Hills Natural Area

A 340-acre natural area about 10 miles west of Goodman in Sections 11, 12 and 14, T23N, R34W, Tiff City 7.5 min. topographic map. Access is by Hwy B. Designated June 28, 1985 and April 6, 1993.

Natural Features

Dry and dry-mesic chert forests of the Elk River Section, Ozark Natural Division. The dry-mesic chert forest is the predominant natural community, occupying the hollows, slopes and terraces along the larger draws. The dry chert forest occurs on the south-facing slopes and gently sloping ridgetops. Dominant canopy trees are white, black and post oak, along with northern red oak in the dry-mesic portions and chinquapin and black jack oak on the drier sites.
