The Basics
Whether you dream of catching monster bass or you're just looking for a little waterside relaxation, it's easy to get started fishing. All you really need is a pole, a line, a hook, some bait and a permit. The Department of Conservation's Introduction to Fishing brochure presents the basics. Use it as your guide for your first fishing trips.
Special Events
Want to see your kids' faces light up? Take them to a Department of Conservation Kids' Fishing Day event. These expert instructor-led events occur throughout the state all season long. Check the events calendar in your region to see when a Kids' Fishing Day is offered in your area. Use this time to gather as a family and create lifelong memories, and then celebrate your kid's first catch with MDC's First Fish Award.
Regulations
Before heading the stream or lake, be sure to get a fishing permit. You can buy them online, over the phone, at any MDC office or from over a thousand vendors around the state. Trout permits are also available, and trout parks require daily tags, which are available on site. The annual Fishing Regulations Summary is full of valuable fishing information, including how to identify and measure your catch, length limits, special area regulations, and state record catches. Guidelines for handling and releasing fish are available for those who choose to catch and release their fish.
Find more detailed information about where to fish, what to fish for, and how to catch it in MDC's Fishing Prospects. A weekly fishing report provides up-to-date information on fishing conditions at your destination. Once you've gotten hooked on fishing, learn more about the sport fish of Missouri, state record fish, and fish your way toward a Missouri Master Angler Award. Or just savor the simple joys of relaxing with family and friends on Missouri's wonderful streams, lakes and ponds.
