How You Can Help Conserve Them

Set line abuse wastes fish and endangers others—
Check set lines every 24 hours!

As the popularity of catfishing in Missouri increases, so does the pressure on catfish fisheries around the state. A good deal of that pressure comes from anglers using some form of set line method (jug line, trot line, limb line, throw line, etc.).

Unattended set lines not only inconvenience anglers and boaters, they also damage the resource when fish are hooked, but never removed from the lines. The Missouri Wildlife Code clearly states that all set lines must be checked every 24 hours or completely removed. Conservation agents in several parts of the state have been working hard to crack down on improper use of setlines and those efforts will continue.

Proper use of set lines in both reservoirs and streams is an important step in helping to conserve our catfish fisheries. To learn more about this issue and how to help conserve catfish in Missouri, read "Watch Those Lines!" from the Missouri Conservationist magazine.
