The Blue River basin (Figure lo) is a sub-basin of the Missouri River basin. The Missouri portion of the watershed (40%) is in western Jackson County and the northwestern corner of Cass County (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers [USACOE]1974). Nearly all of the Kansas portion of the watershed is in eastern Johnson County.

The Blue River originates at the confluence of Wolf and Coffee creeks which is three miles south of Stanley, Kansas. The river flows 41 miles northeast and enters the Missouri River at river mile 357. Other major tributaries of the Blue River include Camp Branch, Mill Creek, Negro Creek, Indian Creek, Brush Creek, and Round Grove Creek.
