A Conservation Success Story
Wild turkeys would have qualified as a "rare and endangered species" in Missouri 60 years ago. The state's turkey population dropped to fewer than 2,500 birds in 31 counties in 1952. Intensive conservation efforts led to the first turkey hunting season just eight years later in 1960. In 2006, Missouri hunters harvested over 69,500 turkeys.
