"Q" imageWhere do red-tailed hawks nest? How far from houses and people? How big do they grow? How old?

Daniel, age unknown

"A" image Red-tailed hawks nest in trees or cliff s. In Missouri, they prefer farmland or mixed forests, but they may be found in cities if conditions are right. Red-tailed hawks even live on building ledges in New York City. Because they are so adaptable, red-tails are one of the most widespread and successful birds of prey in North America. Adults weigh 1.5-3.5 pounds, have a wingspread of 48-58 inches and are 18-26 inches long. Though many do not live past 2 years of age, the oldest known ages for red-tails are 21.5 years in the wild and 29.5 years in captivity.

"Q" imageDo worms have mouths?

Morgan, 9

"A" imageWorms do have mouths, they’re just very small. A worm’s mouth is at the very tip of its head, hidden under a flap of skin. It’s easiest to tell head from tail on adult worms, because they have a smooth, thick band, or “saddle” near one end. The band is closer to the worm’s head than its tail. Or, simpler yet—see which direction they squirm in.
