Only tough plants and animals dare to live in glades. The temperature is high, there is little water and often more rocks than soil. But glades are home to many rare and endangered species. And these species need your help to protect their desert-like habitat.
You can help by participating in a 10K Run, 5K Run or a 5K Walk, beginning at 9 a.m. at the North Jefferson City Pavilion, near the Katy Trail at the intersection of Highways 63 and 54. The annual Endangered Species Walk/Run raises funds for endangered species and healthy habitats in Missouri.
Anyone can participate as an individual, but a group of kids 18 and under can join as a team at a reduced rate. Team members can sign up for the 10K run, 5K run or 5K walk, and not all team members have to choose the same race.
Team registration fee is $10 for the entire team. Youth Team Registration forms and waivers are available by writing to the address below and online at www.missouriconservation.org/programs/es_walkrun/. Forms must be received by Oct. 2.
In addition to the team certificates, pictures and souvenirs, youth team members are eligible for awards given to the first three male and female finishers in the 10K run 19 and younger division and each of the following 5K run and 5K walk divisions: 10 and younger; 11 through 14; and 15 through 19.
Safety rule: No headphones or pets allowed on the trail.
Kids, draw a picture of a glade plant or animal in the circle below. See glade article in this magazine for information on glade species.

Design your button to fit in the middle circle to the right, then fill out the information below, so your button can be returned.
