Caloplaca murorum
Caloplaca saxicola
Caloplaca obscurella (Körb.) Th. Fr.
Wetmore (1994): Taney Co.
Caloplaca oxfordensis - cited from St. Louis Co. by Rudolph (1955) [as Pyrenodesmia oxfordensis], Gier & Jones (1954), and Gier & Kendrick (1972). There is also a literature report in Skorepa (1973). The Gier reports are based on Nelson s.n. 14 May 1904 (MCJ 5480), which is C. flavovirescens. The specimen cited by Rudolph, which probably forms the basis for Skorepa's report, has not been seen, but is tentatively referred to C. sideritis.

Caloplaca saxicola (Hoffm.) Nordin
Gier & Kendrick (1972): Vernon Co. [as C. murorum].
Hale (1979): mapped from extreme SE Mo. Note: Gier & Kendrick (1972) also report this species from Dade Co., based on Wilson s.n. 18 April 1957 (MCJ 8524), which is a small, crustose Caloplaca not in section Gasparrinia; this casts doubts on the validity of the Vernon Co. report, for which the voucher specimen has not been located. Reports of this species from Missouri by Ladd & Nelson (1982), Ladd & Wilhelm (1983), and Nelson (1985) are referable to an unknown Caloplaca. Caloplaca saxicola is known from a single modern collection in northwestern Missouri; it also occurs in several Illinois counties adjacent to Missouri.
Caloplaca sideritis (Tuck.) Zahlbr.
Wetmore (1992b): Newton Co. See C. oxfordensis.
Caloplaca spaldingii - cited from Vernon Co. by Gier & Kendrick (1972); this report is based on Kendrick s.n. 20 March 1971 (MCJ 11046), which consists of a sterile, yellow-orange thallus containing parietin and reacting KOH+ magenta. According to Rudolph (1955), who cites C. spaldingii only from the type locality in Arizona, it is a "distinctive plant with its dark olive thallus and minute black apothecia" and reacts KOH in the thallus. The Missouri report is obviously based on a misidentification. Wetmore (1994) discusses some of the uncertainties surrounding the taxonomy of this species.

CANDELARIELLA Müll. Arg.
Candelariella aurella - cited by Berry (1937) from Franklin Co.; this is the basis for the literature report in Gier & Kendrick (1972). The specimen on which these reports are based, Hubricht B105 (US), is Candelariella vitellina. Several other Missouri collections at US and UMO determined by Berry as this taxon are various species of Caloplaca. Tuckerman (1882) and Fink (1910) also attributed this taxon to Missouri, but the single collection mentioned from Missouri by Tuckerman is placed under Candelariella aurella with the statement "possibly...but not clear" [as Placodium vitellinum var. aurellum]. In light of the confusion surrounding Missouri reports of C. aurella, and lack of confirming specimens, the species is provisionally excluded from the flora.

The specimen upon which these reports are based, Berry 266 (UMO), was determined by Berry as C. leptoria, and cited previously by him (1936) as C. leporina; the specimen is C. cristatella. Hale (1979) cites C. bellidiflora from the Pacific Northwest and arctic Canada, and Thomson (1967) describes it as an arctic and northern species.

Many of the reports from Gier & Kendrick (1972) are referable to C. cryptochlorophaea. See discussion under C. pyxidata. The Reynolds Co. specimen cited by AES (1986), Apfelbaum 280 (MOR), is C. grayi. Of the 3 specimens cited as this species by Nelson (1977), 2 are C. grayi and one is C. cryptochlorophaea. Reports of C. fimbriata from Boone Co. by Berry (1936, 1937) and St. Louis Co. and Pacific by Nelson (1911), as well as the literature report by Gier & Kendrick (1972), are probably referable to this group. Cladonia foliacea - Berry (1937) cites this taxon from Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Louis, and Washington cos. According to Esslinger & Egan (1995), North American reports of this taxon represent misidentifications. Gier & Kendrick (1972) imply that the Berry reports are referable to C. robbinsii.

Cladonia subradiata (Vain.) Sandst.
Ladd (1996): Phelps Co.; Mo. specimens are described as "somewhat atypical".
Cladonia subtenuis
Cladina subtenuis
Cladonia subulata -cited from Boone Co. by Berry (1936, 1937) [as C. fimbriata var. subulata]; the 1937 report forms the basis for the literature report by Gier & Kendrick (1972). The only Missouri specimen located, Berry 379 (UMO), is C. cylindrica. Thomson (1984) states that C. subulata is a boreal species. On the basis of these data, C. subulata is excluded from the Missouri flora.

Collema granosum [¸ C. auriforme (With.) Coppins & J. R. Laundon] cited from Boone Co. by Berry (1936), and from Boone and Johnson cos. by Berry (1937); these form the basis for the literature report in Gier & Kendrick (1972) [as C. auriculatum]. Only a Boone Co. specimen cited in Berry's reports has been located. This specimen, Drouet 388 (UMO), is Leptogium burnetiae. Degelius (1974) lists only Alaska in his North American range for C. auriforme, and states that several other specimens originally determined as this taxon are misidentifications. In light of these data, the species is excluded from the Missouri flora.
Collema limosum -cited from Clay Co. by Gier & Jones (1954) [as C. glaucescens], and Gier & Kendrick (1972). The specimen upon which these reports are based, Gier s.n. 17 May 1949 (MCJ 1643), is a scrappy specimen of Leptogium lichenoides.
Collema multipartitum -cited from Newton Co. by Gier & Kendrick (1972), almost certainly based on a misidentification. No confirming specimens have been located, despite an exhaustive search of MCJ. Degelius (1974) lists North American records only from Alaska and Alberta, Canada.
