General news

The Conservation Commission met October 3 at the Ramada Inn Conference Center in Hannibal. The open meeting began at 10:15 a.m. with all Commissioners present:

Ronald J. Stites, Plattsburg

Randy Herzog, St. Joseph

Anita B. Gorman, Kansas City

Howard L. Wood, Bonne Terre

The next meeting was set for November 7, 1997 in Warsaw.


Regulations

The Commission approved an amendment to the Wildlife Code that establishes procedures for suspending hunting and/or fishing permits of individuals deemed not to be in compliance with applicable child support laws, as mandated by federal and state legislation.

The Commission also approved amendments to area rules that, effective November 1, 1997, opens deer hunting under statewide regulations on the National Guard Unit of Fort Crowder Conservation Area, Newton County, and allows fishing in the lakes/ponds on Prairie Home Conservation Area, Cooper and Moniteau counties.


Land Acquisitions

The Commission acquires land only from willing sellers, making annual payments to compensate local governments and schools for lost tax revenues at assessment levels current when acquired. Public access to acquisitions will be appropriate only after closing of real estate transactions, at which time boundaries will be marked and further information will be available. Approval was given to proceed with acquisition of the following:

· accept as a gift 196 acres in Iron County as a new conservation area. The tract is located five miles southeast of Ironton adjacent to Grassy Mountain.

· accept as a gift 10 acres in St. Louis County as a new urban wild acres areaCJean and Joan Goodson Conservation AreaClinked with Phantom Forest Conservation Area.

· accept as a gift approximately 8 acres from Franklin County as an addition to the Dr. Henry A. and Amalia Uhlemeyer Access on the Bourbeuse River.Approved

· a reformatted and revised version of the Department's Human Resources Policy Manual.

· the name AColumbia Bottom Conservation Area@ for the 4,318-acre tract at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers recently acquired from the City of St. Louis.

· Briefing on the status of management of lands acquired in the Missouri River floodplain following the 1993 flood.

· A funding request proposal by Mary Burrows, President, StreamTeach Inc. of St. Louis, for a stream-based education and recreation learning park in the St. Louis area.
