March 27, 1998, report of news and decisions of the Missouri Conservation Commission

The Conservation Commission met at 10:15 a.m. on March 27 at Marina Bay Resort and Lakeside Conference Center, Osage Beach, in conjunction with the Conservation Federation of Missouri's annual conference. Three commissioners were present:

Ronald J. Stites, Plattsburg

Randy Herzog, St. Joseph

Anita B. Gorman, Kansas City

The next meeting was set for April 23 in Jefferson City.


PRESENTATIONS

The Commission presented an Award for 2,000 hours of volunteer service at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center to Richard D. Niles of Springfield.

Michael E. Ohlms, secretary of the Missouri Hunter Education Instructors Association, Old Monroe, discussed regulation changes being considered that would allow deer and turkey hunting by youngsters under 11 years of age who are not the children of landowners.

Wildlife Division staff presented information about dead trees at Ted Shanks and Schell-Osage conservation areas.

Design and Development Division staff presented a conceptual design for development of Nodaway Valley Conservation Area.

Wildlife Research Biologist David Hamilton presented information about the status of the European Union's Fur Regulation.


LAND ACQUISITION

The Commission acquires land only from willing sellers and makes annual payments to compensate local governments and schools for lost tax revenues at assessment levels current when acquired. Public access to acquisitions is appropriate only after closing of real estate transactions, at which time boundaries have been marked and further information is available. The Commission approved proceeding with the following:

·purchase of approximately 0.1 acre in Chariton County as an addition to Brunswick Access on the Grand River.

·conveying-at no cost-approximately 0.6 acre of Honey Creek Access, Cole County, to the Cole County Commission for road and bridge improvements.


ADMINISTRATION

The Commission approved a revised memorandum of understanding with the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation-to be conveyed to the Foundation for its approval.
