CONSERVATION ACTION
News of the June 29, 2001 Conservation Commission meeting

The Conservation Commission met June 29 at the Conservation Department’s Northwest Regional Office, St. Joseph. Commissioners present were:

Randy Herzog, St. Joseph
Ronald J. Stites, Plattsburg
Anita B. Gorman, Kansas City
Howard L. Wood, Bonne Terre

The next meeting of the Conservation Commission was set for July 18, 2001 at the Department Headquarters, Jefferson City, Missouri.

PRESENTATIONS

Commission meetings are open to the public. Those wishing to be placed on the agenda for a presentation or other business must send a written request to: Director, Department of Conservation, P. O. Box 180, Jefferson City MO 65102-0180, or FAX to (573) 751-4467, at least 10 working days before the meeting date, July 18, 2001. The Commission heard the following presentations:

Mark Lagergren, Kansas City Retriever Club Board Member, presented information on dog trials on Conservation Department property.

Bruce Richardson, Savannah, discussed youth deer hunt season dates for 2001.

Sterett W. Schanze, City manager, St. Joseph, and partners associated with the St. Joseph Riverfront Development Plan presented and update and overview of the St. Joseph Riverfront Nature Center.

REGULATIONS

The Commission approved changing the waterfowl hunting zones for 2001 through 2005. New zoning boundaries are to include St. Charles County in the Middle Zone and the use of Highway 54 as the boundary between the South and Middle zones in southwest Missouri.

The Commission approved an increase in non-resident deer and turkey hunting permits by $20. There will be no price increase for resident or non-resident first or second bonus deer hunting permits or youth deer and turkey hunting permits. Fee structure is as follows:

ADMINISTRATION: The Commission also took the following action:

authorized increasing FY02 estimated revenues for the Wildlife Conservation Restoration Program (WCRP); authorized one-time increase to the FY02 budget; allocated $30,000 to each Regional Coordination Team and Research Coordination Team for qualifying projects; and authorized allocation of up to $320,000 on conservation partnership projects and grants to further the purposes of WCRP
authorized the sale of two small parcels of land from the Gasconade Park Access located in Gasconade County.
approved suspension of Department efforts to consider the feasibility of re- introducing elk to the state.
authorized implementation of guidelines for meetings attended at Department expense.

Received an overview of the George O. White State Forest Nursery operations.
