News of the July 18, 2001 Conservation Commission meeting

The Conservation Commission met July 18 at Department Headquarters, Jefferson City. Commissioners present were:

Randy Herzog, St. Joseph
Anita B. Gorman, Kansas City
Howard L. Wood, Bonne Terre

The next meeting of the Conservation Commission was set for August 24, 2001 at Department Headquarters, Jefferson City, Missouri.

New officers were elected for Fiscal Year 2000-2001: Anita B. Gorman, Chairman; Howard L. Wood, Vice Chairman. Action on election of Secretary was deferred pending appointment of two new commissioners by Governor Holden.

PRESENTATIONS:

Commission meetings are open to the public. Those wishing to be placed on the agenda for a presentation or other business must send a written request to Director, Department of Conservation, P.O. Box 180, Jefferson City, MO 65102-0180, or FAX to (573) 751-4467, at least 10 working days before the meeting date. The Commission heard the following presentations:

  • Dick Baskett, Ducks Unlimited, presented a framed print, acknowledging the strengthened partnership with the Department for advancing wetland conservation on private land.
  • State Representative Gary Burton, Joplin Mayor Darieus Adams, and Dave Catlin of the Audubon Society, provided an update on the Southwest Missouri Nature Center and a time line for completion.

At a special ceremony in conjunction with the meeting, the Commission Chairman presented service awards to the following long-term employees:

  • Twenty-Five Year Service Awards: William Yarber, Forestry Division; Norbert Giessman, Wildlife Division; John McPherson, Fisheries Division; John Bendure, Administrative Services Division; Deborah Goff, Human Resources Division; Chester Gary Cravens, Jr., Protection Division; Stanley Doak, Fisheries; Angeline Holland, Administrative Services Division; and Larry Houf, Wildlife Division.
  • Thirty Year Service Awards: Wilbur Ness, Fisheries Division; Leo Sanders, Forestry Division; and John Shatford, III, Wildlife Division.
  • Thirty-Five Year Service Awards: Patrick Kelly, Administration.
  • Forty-Five Year Service Award: Carl Engelbrecht, Protection Division.

Also at the ceremony, the Commission inducted Dr. Thomas S. Baskett into the Missouri Conservation Hall of Fame. Dr. Thomas S. Baskett was an exceptional force in the conservation movement in Missouri and the nation as a teacher, researcher, writer, editor and administrator. Most of his career was spent as the leader of the Missouri Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Through his association with the University of Missouri as a professor, he administered one of the strongest and most successful cooperative wildlife research programs in the nation.

ADMINISTRATION: The Commission also took the following action:

  • Accepted as a gift approximately three acres on Cuivre River in Lincoln County from the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation.
  • Authorized the Director to notify other states that Missouri will establish reciprocal permit fees where needed to ensure fairness for Missouri citizens who hunt deer and turkey in their states.
