Becoming a Partner
You can become a partner, through your business, organization or on your own, in making the dream of a litter-free Missouri come true. If you want to help by setting up your own anti-litter efforts in your community or organization, that's one way to make a difference. Providing funds to expand our advertising effort fills another critical need.
We can only reduce littering with a long-term, statewide awareness campaign. Education efforts, community events and other parts of the effort are essential. However, many Missourians get their information from television and radio. In the past, stations were required by law to run a certain number of public service announcements - now they don't have to. So the only way to get the message on these powerful media at times when most people are watching is through paid advertising.
The Missouri Departments of Transportation (MoDOT) and Conservation (MDC) joined to get the campaign started. But it will take more than the initial budget to keep the campaign alive and effective.
The initial campaign budget was $80,000. A more typical budget for a statewide effort reaching a broad audience in Missouri would be $2 million. To use the dollars wisely, we focused on 16-24 year olds because research has shown they litter the most. By targeting that age group, we could also reduce the advertising costs.
To keep the message in the public eye, the campaign should be expanded to reach a wider range of ages and to run the ads longer than the initial 10 weeks. Your support in funding advertising to a wider audience will help all Missourians become part of this effort.
Experience in other states has shown that as long as the message is highly visible, people remember to stop littering. When the reminder is gone, the litter returns.
